The Humble Wildcats spoiled Channelview’s Homecoming on Friday with a commanding second-half performance, storming back to earn a 32–21 victory and their first District 23-6A win of the season.
Channelview came out firing, scoring on its second play of the night when senior quarterback Julian Aboyte launched a deep strike to Davion Vanderbilt, who took it the distance for an early lead.
Humble quickly answered. A fumble recovery by Riley Cunningham set the Wildcats up at the 5-yard line, where quarterback Vincent Joseph punched it in on the next snap. On Humble’s following possession, Joseph capped a five-play drive with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Williams, who made a tough grab through contact to give the Wildcats their first advantage.
The momentum swung just before halftime. With 1:18 remaining in the second quarter, Aboyte found Darius Myles on a 20-yard pass up the middle to reclaim the lead for Channelview. Moments later, after a fumbled kickoff recovery by Dale Taylor, Aboyte connected with Patricio Martinez on the very next play, pushing the Falcons ahead 21–13.
Humble threatened in the closing seconds of the half behind a 53-yard gain from Torrin Alpough, but the drive stalled as the Falcons’ defense stiffened near the red zone.
After halftime, the Wildcats regrouped and completely took over. Their defense pitched a shutout while the offense found its rhythm behind Joseph’s control and composure.
A key interception by Jalen Wilridge sparked the turnaround, setting up a short five-play drive that ended with Joseph hitting Aedyn Busby for a 19-yard touchdown. The two-point try came up short, leaving Humble within two at 21–19.
From there, Joseph spread the field with precision, completing passes to eight different receivers. Jayden Heaton led the way with 95 receiving yards on five catches, while Alpough added 75 yards on three receptions. Benjamin Cejaprovided a crucial 24-yard grab on the drive that would put Humble ahead for good.
Down by two late in the fourth quarter, Humble took advantage of a turnover on downs. Joseph broke loose for a 42-yard run, and a few plays later, connected again with Alpough for a 14-yard touchdown to give the Wildcats the lead.
On the next possession, Joseph engineered another efficient march — five plays for 59 yards — finishing it himself with a strong run up the middle to extend the advantage and seal the comeback.
Joseph finished the night with 424 total yards of offense, going 20-for-33 for 292 passing yards and adding 132 yards on the ground. It was one of the program’s most complete offensive performances in recent memory.
Humble’s defense was equally impressive, forcing two turnovers and holding Channelview to just 265 total yards, including only 16 rushing yards.
For the Falcons (1-4, 0-2), it was a hard-fought effort after last week’s 73–0 loss to state-ranked Summer Creek. Two of Channelview’s losses this season have come by a combined eight points, with their lone win coming against Aldine MacArthur on Sept. 5.
The Wildcats (2-3, 1-1) have now defeated Channelview four consecutive times and have won two of their last three. Their district slate intensifies next week with Atascocita at Turner Stadium, followed by matchups with C.E. King and Summer Creek.
At halftime, Channelview’s Homecoming court was recognized, with @truly_migu3l crowned king and @valentiinaa_vv named queen — a high point in the evening before Humble took control down the stretch to walk away with a statement road win.
