AUTHOR:Francisco Alvarez

In a night full of tension, resilience, and unforgettable moments, Houston Dynamo FC staged a dramatic comeback to defeat Louisville City FC 2–1 and advance in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

For nearly the entire match, Houston found themselves chasing the game after Louisville City grabbed the early advantage. As the clock wound down, the Dynamo were staring at elimination, until a moment of brilliance flipped everything.

In the 89th minute, Erik Sviatchenko rose to the occasion, literally. Meeting a perfectly delivered ball from Héctor Herrera, Sviatchenko launched himself forward and buried a diving header to level the match, sending the crowd into chaos and breathing life back into Houston’s cup hopes.

With momentum fully on their side, the Dynamo carried that energy straight into extra time, and it didn’t take long to capitalize.

In the 101st minute, during the first half of overtime, Ezequiel Ponce delivered the decisive blow. Once again, it was Herrera pulling the strings, providing his second assist of the night with a precise setup that Ponce finished clinically to give Houston a 2–1 lead.

From there, the Dynamo stayed composed, managing the remainder of extra time with discipline to secure the comeback victory.

Two goals. Both assisted by Herrera. Both arriving when Houston needed them most.

The win not only showcased the team’s fight but also highlighted the leadership and playmaking quality of Herrera in the biggest moments. Down to the wire, Houston refused to fold and instead turned adversity into one of their most thrilling victories of the tournament.

Now, Houston Dynamo FC march on to the quarterfinals, carrying momentum, belief, and a reminder to every opponent: this team is never out of the fight.
