College Baseball Takes Over Houston for a Big Weekend at Daikin Park
The Houston Astros Foundation College Classic unfolded at Daikin Park, delivering three days of tight battles, from February 27 - March 1. Houston brought together six Division I programs; Texas, Coastal Carolina, Ohio State, UTSA, Ole Miss, and Baylor; high-energy baseball games that had the crowd on its feet from start to finish.
The Classic opened with one of the most exciting games, UTSA vs. Ohio State. The Roadrunners fell behind quickly as the Buckeyes built a 2–0 lead, but UTSA refused to fade. A two‑RBI single in the sixth inning tied the game, and in the seventh, outfielder Lane Haworth launched a go‑ahead two‑run homer that sent the UTSA dugout into a frenzy. Ohio State mounted a late push with two runs in the ninth, but the Roadrunners’ bullpen held firm to secure a 6–5 win.
Friday night belonged to the Texas Longhorns, who announced themselves with authority in an 8–1 victory over No. 9 Coastal Carolina. Texas peppered the scoreboard with home runs, including a 466‑foot blast from Aiden Robbins that rocketed into left‑center and electrified the stadium. On the mound, Ruger Riojas was dominant, striking out 11 and keeping Coastal’s hitters guessing all night.
Saturday kept the momentum rolling. UTSA followed its opening win with a 16–10 slugfest victory over Coastal Carolina, showcasing an offense that refused to slow down.
Texas, meanwhile, edged Baylor 5–2 in a game defined by timely hitting and crisp defensive execution. Every inning felt like a chess match, and the Longhorns consistently made the right moves.
Sunday’s slate delivered decisive results across the board. Coastal Carolina earned a 9–2 win over Ole Miss, but the day, and the weekend, belonged to Texas. The Longhorns capped off an undefeated run with a 10–3 win over Ohio State, powered by a seven‑run third inning that broke the game open early. Multiple hitters contributed key swings, and every Texas plate appearance seemed to lift the crowd’s energy.
More Than Baseball: A Weekend of Community
Beyond the box scores, the Classic thrived on atmosphere. Families, students, and longtime fans packed the stands, creating a lively mix of cheers and shared excitement. Every strikeout drew applause, and every home run brought strangers together in celebration.
The Classic delivered far more than a weekend of baseball. It offered a shared experience, full of big plays, shared moments, and the kind of energy that reminds people why live sports continue to bring communities together.
