Houston Dynamo FC continued its strong preseason form on Wednesday night, defeating Colombian side América de Cali 2-1 in an entertaining international friendly. An early goal from Duncan McGuire gave Houston the perfect start before América de Cali equalized just before halftime with a well-struck free kick. With the match seemingly headed for a draw, Ezequiel Ponce delivered the decisive moment in the closing minutes, scoring a stunning long-range winner to secure another positive result for the Dynamo.
For Head Coach Ben Olsen, the evening was another valuable opportunity to evaluate his squad against quality international competition. While preseason matches are focused on preparation rather than results, Houston once again showed resilience, attacking quality, and composure in key moments.
The Dynamo could not have asked for a better start.
Just minutes after kickoff, Houston capitalized on an aggressive opening spell. The Dynamo pressed high, won possession in dangerous areas, and quickly turned defense into attack. The move ended with Duncan McGuire finding himself in the right place at the right time, calmly finishing to give Houston a 1-0 advantage within the opening minutes.
The early goal energized both the players and the home crowd as Houston controlled much of the first half. The midfield dictated possession with crisp passing while the back line remained organized whenever América attempted to push forward. Houston created several promising opportunities to extend its lead, but the Colombian visitors gradually settled into the match and began finding more rhythm in possession.
Despite Houston's strong defensive organization, América de Cali found its breakthrough moments before halftime.
After earning a free kick just outside the penalty area, América's set-piece specialist stepped up and curled an excellent effort beyond the reach of the goalkeeper, leveling the match at 1-1 just before the halftime whistle. The quality of the strike left little chance for a save and gave the visitors renewed confidence heading into the break.
The equalizer changed the complexion of the match, setting up an intriguing second half between two sides looking to finish preseason with momentum.
Following halftime, the game became more evenly contested as both teams enjoyed spells of possession. Houston remained patient in build-up play while América looked dangerous on the counterattack. Ben Olsen rotated several players throughout the second half, giving valuable minutes to different members of the squad without sacrificing the team's intensity or structure.
The Dynamo continued searching for a breakthrough, creating chances through quick passing combinations and movement in the attacking third. Although opportunities came and went, América's defense held firm, forcing Houston to remain patient as the clock wound down.
Just when the match appeared destined to end in a draw, Houston produced one final moment of quality.
With less than five minutes remaining in regulation, Ezequiel Ponce received the ball outside the penalty area and wasted no time creating space for himself. The Argentine forward unleashed a powerful strike from outside the box that flew past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net, sending the home supporters into celebration.
It was a goal worthy of winning any match.
Ponce's late strike rewarded Houston for its persistence throughout the evening and capped another encouraging preseason performance. Rather than settling for the draw, the Dynamo continued attacking until the final whistle, a mentality that reflected the competitive standard Ben Olsen has emphasized throughout preseason.
While the dramatic finish will dominate the headlines, Houston's overall performance offered several positives. Duncan McGuire demonstrated his finishing ability with his first goal for Houston, the midfield controlled long stretches of play, and the defense responded well after conceding from one of the few dangerous opportunities América created.
Perhaps most encouraging was the team's composure. After surrendering the lead moments before halftime, Houston never appeared rattled. Instead, the Dynamo remained organized, trusted their game plan, and eventually found the decisive breakthrough when it mattered most.
As preseason preparations continue, Houston Dynamo FC appears to be building confidence with every performance. Consecutive victories over respected international opposition have showcased the club's growing chemistry and attacking depth, while also giving the coaching staff valuable insight into the squad ahead of the regular season.
Wednesday night's victory may have come in a friendly, but the determination shown until the final whistle is exactly the type of mentality Houston hopes to carry into meaningful competition in the weeks ahead.
