On the eve of the 2026 MLS season, confidence and ambition were on full display at Shell Energy Stadium as General Manager Pat Onstad and majority owner Ted Segal addressed the media about the club’s direction.
For both leaders, the message was consistent: this roster was intentionally built to compete at the highest level.
“It always feels like Christmas Eve before opening day,” Segal said. “We’re excited about how we rebuilt the roster this offseason.”
Houston made several key additions, targeting players with leadership backgrounds and championship experience. Among them are Mateusz Bogusz, Agustin Bouzat, Guilherme, and defender Lucas Halter, while captain Héctor Herrera remains a central figure in the squad.
Onstad emphasized that leadership was a deliberate priority in recruitment.
“We were intentional about bringing in players who have won trophies and worn the captain’s armband,” he said. “When games get tight, you need players who know how to manage those moments.”
Segal echoed that ambition, reinforcing that building a championship contending club is not seasonal motivation; it is the organization’s standard.
“It’s always our intent to field a team that can compete for championships,” Segal said. “Sometimes roster constraints impact timing, but the expectation never changes.”
The Dynamo’s locker room reflects the global nature of the sport, with players representing multiple countries and football cultures. According to both leaders, diversity has strengthened chemistry and competitiveness throughout preseason preparations.
From a tactical standpoint, fans may see increased flexibility this year. Onstad indicated the team could deploy multiple formations, including systems utilizing wingbacks to create attacking width and defensive versatility.
When discussing expectations, both were aligned: the playoffs are the minimum benchmark. Securing a top four finish in the Western Conference and the home-field advantage that accompanies it is a central goal.
“Put yourself in position,” Segal said. “Once you’re in the playoffs, anything can happen.”
Houston opens the season against the Chicago Fire FC, followed by a high-profile matchup with Los Angeles FC. With strong ticket demand and momentum building across the city, particularly as Houston prepares for its role in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the club views this season as a pivotal moment.
“We’re really excited about this group,” Onstad said. “It’s going to be a fun team to watch.”
With leadership aligned at both the executive and technical levels, the Houston Dynamo enter 2026 with clear ambition, not just to compete, but to contend.
